My Ideal Blanket

In the Compare Blankets section on this site we said that finding the right type of blanket will be easy after you answer some questions on how you plan on using the blanket. While finding the right type may be easy, finding the brand and model to buy can be a little tricky. There are a lot of variations in picking a particular product. Some factors that come to mind are build quality, company support, design features or flaws, and price points. There is no one right answer, but we have curated a list of companies that we generally recommend and link to specific blankets by those companies. While it is difficult list every type of weighted blanket to buy, we can give recommendations on brands that we feel are a good choice. By pointing you to the brands and some specific blankets, we feel that you can get a great blanket that meets your needs.

Keep in mind that while we believe that these are the better blankets on the market, all blankets can have issues. When selecting brands and specific blankets, our goal was to find products that would minimize the most common complaints with weighted blankets. Picking one brand over another does not mean that you will not experience any issues. The common complaints among all blankets were: beads bunch together, seams separating bead panels could rip allowing more beads to bunch together, cleaning challenges, sizes tend to run small, and warmer than expected.

Lastly, we want to talk about polyester. Some people have an aversion of using products that contains polyester. Virtually all weighted blankets use polyester in their fill to help with noise and movement. Even though polyester is being used, the blankets can still be OEKO-TEX certified. If you have a zero polyester policy, then your only option here is Bearaby, which makes a fantastic blanket.

Recommended Brands and Blankets

We looked at many different brands of blankets. There might not always be a weight, size, texture, quality, and material combination to match what you want. Below are our recommendations for brands and blankets to help you make your decision.

Here are the brands:

Luxome

We love Luxome because they use high quality materials in all of their products. The blanket comes with a reversible cover; one side is made with 300TC Lyocell for warmer nights, the other side is 195 GSM minky for cozy evenings. The inner blanket is made from high quality percale cotton with a 233 thread count. The filler is a combination of fiber and 1mm glass beads. The filler has durable stitching between panels to keep beads from bunching. With the high quality materials being used, it is not surprising that this blanket is OEKO-TEX certified, which we recommend. Once you fall in love with this blanket, you will want to get their other products.

Bearaby

Bearaby is one of the brands people immediately think of when talking about weighted blankets and that is for good reason! Their blankets are high quality and a show piece that will go in any room and decor. They are absolutely stunning. Bearaby has taken a different approach to weighted blanket by not using any filling. Their Cotton Napper blankets are knitted out of thick organic cotton making them OEKO-TEX certified, which we recommend. A lot of blankets will claim that they are a cooling blanket, but Bearaby is truly a cooling blanket due to the large holes in the knitting pattern. These holes allow air to easily flow through for breathability. One common complaint is that it is not as warm as they thought it would be. If warmth is what you are looking for, it is recommended to use this with another blanket to prevent the airflow. Personally, we rather start with something cooler and add on as necessary so it can truly be a four season blanket. If you have doubts whether you will get too hot at night with this blanket, Bearaby also makes the Tree Napper which is made out of Tencel. It is basically the same blanket, but in a different material. You cannot go wrong with Bearaby. They have a wide variety of colors. We are always impressed by their products.

Gravity

It is hard to talk about weighted blankets without bringing up Gravity. They also make a premium product with a micro-fiber fleece duvet cover. The internal blanket is made with cotton with glass beads as the filler. They use a zipper system to help keep the blanket stay inside the duvet cover which is really nice. The blanket does come with a bag making it easier to transport. They claim it is breathable and have a cooling version, but you can see it uses a micro-fiber fleece which we know from our Compare Blankets section, that will tend to be warmer. Being on the warm side is a common complaint about this blanket. There are a lot of sizes and colors to choose from. Overall, this is a high quality blanket. The only complaint we have is that we just wish it was OEKO-TEX certified for this price point. When ordering, make sure you get the correct weight. If you have any doubts on the weight, order a lighter blanket. A big complaint was that it was too heavy and the return shipping can be expensive.

L'AGRATY

While we all want the absolute best, the price may not always be affordable or the best value. We put L’AGRATY on the list because it is budget friendly with little sacrifice. You still get an OEKO-TEX certified blanket with glass beads. This blanket is made out microfiber material which as we mentioned in the Compare Blankets section, that will tend to run a little warm. They do offer a knitted blanket that allows air to move through it if the warmth is a concern. The blanket does not come with a duvet cover or carrying case, but that is a small sacrifice for the price you are paying. Duvet covers can be purchased separately, which would probably be a good idea so you can keep the blanket clean. While blankets can be cleaned, it is much easier cleaning a duvet cover.

Quility

Quility made our list of weighted blankets due to the quality for the price point. While there are a lot of positives to this blanket, it does have some drawbacks to be aware of which is expected due to the price point. We like that it uses glass beads for the filler. We like that there are a lot of options for colors, weights, and sizes. It seems to be well made. The duvet cover uses a zipper with ties keeping the blanket in place. What we do not like is that it says it is 100% cotton which we feel is a bit misleading. They claim that the shell is 100% cotton, but the blanket is made with a minky fabric which is a synthetic material. The blanket is not OEKO-TEX certified. While it mentions that it is cooling and heating, I would not expect this blanket to run cool due to the synthetic materials. This does not come with a case. As you can see in the reviews, there are a lot of people happy with this blanket. For the price point, this is a good option to consider.

GNO

GNO blankets are in the same category Luxome and we love them. The removable cover is made from bamboo lyocell which we personally like. In our Compare Blankets section we cover how bamboo is breathable which helps with cooling. It is also very soft and luxurious feeling. The blanket itself is made 100% organic cotton with a 400 thread count. So if you decide not to use the bamboo cover, you will still have a luxurious feeling. The blanket uses micro glass beads which we also like. The blanket is OEKO-TEX certified and comes with a carrying case. We like that we get a similar product as the Luxome, but at a slightly cheaper price point. We wish they had more product options for other bedding like Luxome, but if you are only looking for a weighted blanket, this is a great option for less money. GNO has a 100% mine-back refund policy, but some people have noted that the customer service was poor and slow. It is great to have a 100% return policy, but it might be a bit on the slower side.

Hypnoser

Hypnoser has really taken the weighted blanket market by storm. This blanket has been trending and has really taken off. In fact, when you look at their blankets, many of their sizes or weights are out of stock. This caught our attention and why we decided to dive into their blanket. What we really like about the blanket is that they use glass beads and they use smaller pockets to contain the beads for better weight distribution. We also like the price point of the blanket; it is the lowest cost blanket in this list. This is probably why this blanket is so popular. What we do not like is that there are really no options for color and limited options for the material; microfiber or polyester. Those materials are less breathable and tend to make the blanket run warm. The blanket does not come with a cover or a case. It is also not OEKO-TEX certified. The lack of cover, case, and certification is not surprising due to the price point. Our recommendation is to get a duvet cover to help keep it stay clean as it might be challenging to clean.

Nuzzie

Nuzzie made our list due to being eco-friendly. We are always excited when we see a company use recycled materials to try and make this planet a bit nicer. They make a chunky knit blanket like Bearaby. The blanket uses up to 500 recycled water bottles which offsets their carbon footprint. Kudos to Nuzzie for being unique and making this planet a better place! What we like about the blanket it is that it is eco-friendly and has a cheaper price point than most of the other knit type blankets on the market. What we don’t like is that it doesn’t appear to be OEKO-TEX certified. Being that this is a synthetic product made out of recycled materials, it would be nice to see that it was OEKO-TEX certified. There have also been complaints about it pilling. Polyester does have a tendency to pill, but it sounds like they have made some changes and newer blankets may not experience this any more or as much. It is also good to see they have good customer support responding to issues like these. With all said, I would not hesitate to order a blanket, especially with as many positive reviews they have received.

Heavier Blankets

We do not recommend heavier blankets, but we do realize that there are people that want a really heavy blanket so we’ve curated a list of heavy blankets worth giving a try. As you may have found, it is hard to find really have blankets, but why is that? The reasons why don’t find many are the reasons why we don’t recommend heavier blankets. The first concern is safety. You never want a blanket too heavy where it can cause injury or death. The other major reason is durability. Heavy blankets just don’t tend to hold up as well as the better weighted blankets. Strong materials and seams are required; not only for the additional weight, but the additional forces of pulling a heavy blanket. Lastly, is cleaning them is much harder. We would recommend layering an additional weighted blanket to give you the ultimate flexibility.

Here are the brands:

HomeSmart

This blanket checks a lot of boxes for us. They have a patent on weighted blanket construction which allows them to make the “World’s Heaviest Blanket!” Not only have they given the construction special attention, they use micro-glass beads and a 400 thread count. The 400 thread count is a soft cotton, but you won’t find that in their listing or site. Unlike most weighted blankets, it is actually big enough to cover the bed and hang over the edge. It also includes loops for a duvet cover. Lastly, they have a 90 day trial period. We just wished it was OEKO-TEX certified. With the 90 day trial, you can’t go wrong. They also offer huge oversized blankets and duvet covers.

OMYSTYLE

This blanket uses Tencel fabric (300 Thread Count) which has good cooling and wicking properties. It also has a plush side to keep you warmer during the cooler months which makes it an all season blanket. Note that in our experience, blankets with a warm and cool side still tend to be a bit warm when using the cooling side. Premium glass beads are used as the fill. The blanket is constructed with smaller pockets using thick double thread. This is helps with durability, weight distribution, and noise. We also love that it is OEKO-TEX certified. Additionally, there are loops for a duvet cover. It also comes with a 30 day trial making this a safe bet!

Choose The Right Weight

Generally we suggest finding a blanket that has the correct 10% body weight at 21 square feet.  If you need to use a larger blanket consider finding one that has the same weight per square foot. e.g.

This study used a blanket at .8 lbs per square foot.

Chart showing weight per sq ft for different weight and dimension blankets.
